Pains in my fingers?
« on: March 02, 2006, 11:22:50 AM »

Hello,

I keep getting real bad pains in the fingers of my left hand (sometimes the right too but never as bad). Its always on the first bone after the palm of my middle and ring finger. Does anyone else suffer? It comes on, I think, when I'm gripping the bars tightly on downhill sections. Any experts out there who can help me out? I even tries ergo grips but they just feel weird as I don't think they are meant to help the symptoms I suffer from!!

Thanks very much

What sort of riding do you do? A major hand related cycling problem involves the Carpal Tunnel, which is essentially your wrist. If your riding position is putting alot of weight on your wrists, that could be a cause.

On a minor note, you shouldn't grip your bars too tightly anyway, your muscles will cope alot better if you're relaxed.

I ride trails and light DH mostly. I'll have a look at my wrist position on my next ride and take it from there! The thing is I try not to grip too hard but sometimes its difficult when I'm hanging on for dear life!

Do you reckon a slightly longer stem would help reduce my up-right position and help take a bit of weight of my hands (currently run 50mm but have a spare 60mm one)? I know the diference isn't much but if it helps!

sounds like a case of arm pump to me, we all suffer from it at certain points when riding!

get a powerball and train those forearms!

no its not arm pump.
Youve basically strained your finger from what i can remeber when a mate of mine got it, its probabl;y from gripping hard and pulling up with your hands rather than using your legs. Only real way to get rid of it is to give riding a break for a while, but my mate just taped 2 bits of foam to his grips so that part of his finger didnt touch his bars and that let him carry on riding.

I used to get callus things realy badly there 'cos when your covering the brake with your index finger thats the biggest point of contact so its rubbing and makes soreness.
It depends what sort of pain it is aswell..
If its an ache its probably more likely to be what Oli said but that should really be higher up in your fingers and spread into the palm of your hand.
If its just soreness eventually the skin will toughen up or get thicker gloves.

You could try stretching your fingers right back then clencing your fist to stretch the muscles and everything out and a grip stregnth ball or the pulley things for stregnth.
Powerballs will be more for forearm and only work for stregnth- plus they sound over priced and summat that will do as much harm as good.

No pins and needles just a pain in the lower finger. Not like a crampy pain more of a sore pain! Will lay off it til next weekend and work on not gripping the bars too hard. It may sound daft but it there a technique I can use to stop me gripping on too tightly? Its a relfelx action when things get steep!

I had something similar at one of the Nationals - got off the uplift and couldn't hold the bars with one hand. I was using Ruffian grips which are quite hard. I changed to Yeti lock ons which are a lot softer and haven't suffered since.

I use Ruffians on my 4X and mess about bikes, but I'm not on those long. The symptoms only showed up when my hands were taking a lot of abuse on downhills.

Don't know whether it's the same, and it looks as though you've changed grips, but maybe try going softer.

You are crushing the tendon against the bone.
Two seasons in Morzine have f**ked up my left hand - strangely my right hand is fine.

I never get arm pump with funnily enough occurs in your arms.

I have a solution though -
Buy a pair of gel palmed gloves (cheap ones)
cut the gel palm open and take out the gel/foam
cut it into small rectangles slighly smaller than the size of the space between your knuckles
Tape it over the sore bit with micropore tape.

Makes a big difference.

Also run your brake levers closer to your bar and get the softest grips you can - I like bontrager Loc ons

This is what kept me riding this season - and liberal use of ibuleve gel.

Cool,
That sounds like it might be the answer! Have your fingers recoverd Rob?
My right hand is also fine but I figured it was because I was right handed my grip would be better or stronger.

I bought Ergon (?) grips, ones that won loads of design awards and are recommended by doctors and all that, but they just feel odd on my bike! I'll look around for some soft grips instead.

Thaks for your help.

If you are looking for soft grips i would really recomend Oury grips, i believe the people that bring in Aireal are trying to import them.
I have them on my bike real soft the only thing is they are a lot thicker than most other grps i've tried.
cheers Steve
