What 100mm BB for my tomac 204 lawwill, help pls????
« on: March 06, 2006, 12:02:47 PM »

Thinking of building up a new bike, like the look of the old tomac 204 lawwils, only thing that is holding me back is that the frame is 7 years old.

I would stick with the BB7 I do know the lawhills are pretty long bikes, and the Balfa will be much better suited to UK riding. It also has things like the 100mm BB which can be a bit of a pain sometimes.

I own a lawill.
The bb can be a slight issue but nothing to worry about.
Its not a long bike at all, top tube is about 21.5 and its a relatively short wheelbase, head angle is fairly steep (i run 200mm 888's with the 05 crown in the highest position and it isn't slack by anyones standards) however the front end is quite high.
BB height is pretty much perfect, plenty of clearance but not too high.

The only major criticisms I have is the chainline although again that can be sorted its just a bast*rd and the shock compatability is poor- as is the manitou bazooka they're spec'd with.

Rides almost exactly the same as a Yeti only the shock is nowhere near as nice as a 6 way etc.
If you want a lawwil i'd go for a yeti or the new Rotec RL9 to be honest

my mate  (kettlegundan) on here has one, and loves it! they are compareable(if not better) than the Yeti DH9s and the new Rotecs.

They are really nice bikes. Ride one before as they do have a weird ride

will check for you, not sure off the top but its the stupidly small reservoir clearance thats a problem- you basically need either avy or a dhx remote reservoir with custom hosing so its expensive either way!

Okay i had one. I also own a BB7 at the moment.

The Tomac Lawill is an excellent bike. It's not long, it's got a steep headangle, good BB height, and generally rides very fun. It's nothing like current Lawill bikes. Other than the name.

They are very old now. They are very solid (Except the swingarm, which is QR and not that stiff) but you can't get around the fatigue issue..

The shock is the main problem. They come with a Manitou Bazooka, which whilst being pretty crap (But by no means terrible, most of the time i coudlnt notice the differance between it and a Fox RC), is VERY dated. No-one can service them and no-one has parts. If anyone does they won't have them forever.

Due to the fully floating shock design, the Bazooka is the only shock you can fit in the 204 due to it having tiny dimensions. It has a 9" i2i, but the spring and body are very thin. You can't fit the spring over an RC body, which is tiny.

When i had mine i was looking into mounting an avalanche on there by making up a new lower shock mount plate (The shock mounts at the bottom to the swingarm by a plate with the Eyelet bolt hole and 4 M6 bolts into the swingarm) which didn't seem like it would have been too hard, however i never got round to trying it. It didn't seem to hard in theory (The shock MUST have a remote res, NO current piggy back shock will fit) but it was money i didn't want to spend.

For the above reasons, stick with your BB7. They ride better (Not as fun in some situations, but a generally better downhill bike), superior shock which you can also get serviced and replaced, and you can fit other shocks to it if you don't like the 5th (And you have an Avy on yours at the moment anyway, did you get my PM by the way?).

Truvaitv make a 100mm version of the Gigapipe bottom bracket.

Not the best quality by any means but I think its the cheapest 100mm bb around (or it was when I built my Vp-free up).

on my PDC DH1 i use the FSA platinum 100mm bb. im not all that impressed with it, its only had 2 major rides and when you spin the bb with the cranks off it is already feeling crunchy.
i wouldnt recommend it

CVI serviced my old rear shock a few years ago, I would have thought most of the parts arent that different its more like whether the person servicing it can be bothered to have a look around for the right seals.
The suspension is excellent, one of the best out there, the chain line is completely s**t and it can t be sorted apart from just using 7 out of your 9spd cassette. I think the bolt thro rear ends were better but are as rare as rocking horse s**t.
Good bike, nice angles, pedals well, corners amazingly

BB give fishers or silverfish

My shock came straight from CVI when I bought the bike- no idea what they did but it was pretty poor and their set-up tips were shocking, not sure they actually know what they're doing but in all fairness shock set-up is so personal you really need to do it yourself.

I'm running a raceface sig. which seems to be holding up really well suprisingly.
Its also rebuildable so in the long run will probably work out cheaper.
