Can anyone out there recomend a decent slave flash unit for an old pentax slr
Its has a hotshoe flash mount and I am unsure about going for wireless or cable so if anyone has thoughts on these I would also like to hear them.

Am on a bit of a budget too so the cheaper the better ideally, I already have a decent flash unit by the way

Yeah, I think they are also known as PC sync sockets.

This is what you will want then, the flash should have a similar looking socket either on the flash body or sometimes on the end of a cable that plugs into the flash.

I currently only use 1 x 580ex on my canon 20D- it cost so much that I cant yet afford a slave flash... my question is:

when I get another flash or 2 (430ex's) and I want to use it/them as a slave at longer distances, I can only use the IR trigger for about 8m - the longest sync cable I have seen is 10m. what do you suggest for longer distances? If I use an optical trigger then chances are it will be set off by the pre - flash...

Also do the sync cables allow ettl to work as normal?

I ask because there is a nice jump at our local and I like to use the 70-200 to get the pics and being f4 to get nice bokeh i need to be about 135mm (above 200mm equiv) The shots at the mo are good but the sky is washed out so I need a flash unit closer to the rider to get more power whilst still keepin the sky detail.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Have a look at bowens pulsars, you would need a unit for each flash and one for the camera (I think). But they have a pretty long range.

I'm pretty sure they don't as the only communication between the camera and flash is the trigger voltage? I always use manual for this, but if you don't want to, then you could buy a light meter that does flash and/or cord readings.

You can buy specific TTL cables but they tend to be only a few feet long.

If the rider is against the sky then yeah, I rekon flash, but if the rider is not up in the sky but against trees and you can see the sky, then you could give ND grad (Neutral Density gradient) filters a go?

Yeah, one for each flash, plus one on the hotshoe.

Thanks guys -

I was reading about this after post and as Roo said The cable is only a few feet long (you can extend it but Im not risking my gear) hence why I did not buy one with the flash and the flash also doesnt have a sync port cause canon are gits! I will take a look at the remote trigger you have detailed but

I met a chap at Abercarn who was asking me about my remote flash setup. Apparently the day before someone had crashed and slid right across where he had his sync cables.

The rider took the whole lot down the hill with him apparently !

When we had the flash setups for one of the RC shoots. Very windy and some diffusing umbrellas.

Flashes were falling over left right and center. Fortunately the sync cable wasn't enough to pull over the camera on a Manfrotto tripod, but it was still dodgy.

Wireless minimizes the amount of gear damaged in dodgy situations Smiley
