Wrist Support
« on: March 26, 2006, 21:14:47 PM »

I been of my bike for 11 weeks with a broke scaphoid. It involved a minor op and bolting the the bones back in to postion.

My wrist is starting to get stornger and I plan on doing some light riding  in the near future. I hoping to find some sort of wrist protection to use during this period.  Are there any out there suitable?

Any one else here broken thier scaphoid? Did you get full/most of your movement back? How long did this take?

Thanks for your time.

I know 661 do wrist guards, never broken my Scaphoid though, so no idea if they are any good or not.

i broke some bone in my wrist, i was in cast for 3 and half weeks and i got back riding lightly after another 2 weeks. its now another 2 weeks on and i have most of my movement back.
i was going to try one of those 661 thing but i just used a banage thing and straped it up when i went riding and it did the job good and save me 15 quid.
hope you riding soon

I've broken both my scaphoid's at different times, and a complete bugger it is too.  I've regained full movement in both, although it has taken a long while.  The 661 Race Brace will help, but you'd probably be better off with a proper medical one, i dare say it'll be cheaper.  Were you given anything? Ive got a brown hospital one that i used?

It took me about a year to get full movement back with no pain, but i started riding gently after about 8weeks.

Broke my scaphoid in October, had it in a cast for 12 weeks been out of a cast since Jan. Been riding with this http://www.sixsixone.com/catalog.aspx?id=0655f248-c5a0-4a75-b854-863ce0b3473c&pl=BIKE

and these gloves http://www.greenfishsports.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=700

Had my first proper ride last sunday at chicksands, did drops etc.. still hurts though. I went back and saw the surgeon this week and had an MRI on it. Seems like its getting there, but may still be a few months before it stops hurting - I guess it just takes time Sad

i pulled some tendon or something in my wrist last year and now use my snowboard wrist guards. theyre ace and really do support your wrist well, made by 'red' i think thyere a sub-company of burton.

theyre good as there is a pretty solid support plate down the top of your arm(as well as a shorter one underneath) so it supports your wrist if it gets bent backwards.  I use these wrist guards even now my wrist is better as it makes my arms feel stronger! though i will say on longer tracks they'll increase arm pump, like this weekend at rheola i couldnt use them.

it would probably also be a good idea to use a powerball (gently) to get the strength back.

I broke my scaphoid back in october. I was in a cast for 6 weeks.  I have had full movement without pain for quite a while (make sure you give yourself lots of physio when you're out of cast to speed up recovery).
Bought some dakine snowboard wrist guards off ebay for

Broke mine a few years back, in a cast for 4 weeks and was riding after about 2 weeks in the cast, once the cast was off, I had full movement and everything, but my wrist would give way over small bumps etc... So it took a few more rides to get it a bit stronger but it's been fine ever since? (I think - I can't remember how much it clicked before I broke it!)

I use Fox wrist wrap gloves.
Long story but I've broken my scaphoids enough times and these were far better than 661 wrist wraps which stop all movement so you dont build up stregnth or movement properly.
The Fox allow your wrist to move but not too far backwards so you can't jolt it back (which is what breaks the schaphoid)

My right scaphoid had a wire through and was in pot 7 weeks, I was riding xc after a week and dh after 2 with no problems and got full movement back with just a bit of physio and normal use.

Only place i've seem them is Stif but if you look round you'l probably find them about quater of the price.

I agree with pop_dog, best one I eventually found was the dakine wrist guard.

You possible need to buy some bigger gloves also to get over it.
