Broken collar bone.
« on: March 28, 2006, 10:23:20 AM »

I broke my collar bone (the clavical) in 2 places (both in the middle) 4 weeks ago :'(. have been to the docs 3 times but they havnt convinced me it ok to just 'let it heal'. The broken part is overlapping with the piece in between the 2 breaks making it like a zig zag, Is the zig zag shape normal? Its lapping so much the skin in streaching to the point where it looks like the first time i put my armour on it will rip. I have broken lots of bones in the past through riding but this one feels wrong. Will i get long term problems with it or will i be back racing soon enough? Hope this makes sense!! Thanks Wink

I broke my colarbone a few months ago and had to have it operated on, and if i were you i'd keep bugging the doctors cause if it doesnt feel right, you dont want to ride on it then fall off and onto the bad shoulder and re break it as that will most likely give you problems for the rest of your life (if it doesnt heal properly. And you dont want the bone piercing the skin as you could get a bone infection, and they really aren't good.

If your local GP surgery has more than one GP then go and see a different one for a second opinion. Just ring up and make an appointment with a different one to the one you usually use.

Hiya mate here my two penny's worth!!  Bust mine badly last APril 2 months before 1st trip to Morzine  :'(  Luckily I was able to move it to end of July, still wasnt healed and hurt like hell!  Mine needed 3 days in hospital what with a long operation to fix it, had internal sutures (or something like that) rather than a plate, this was an experiemnt that I am glad seems to have worked!  Anywasy cue at least 10 appointments with the specialist xrays, fracturing it once when I tried to ride my hardtail one handed with the sling on at my local trail almost went over the bars but flinched enough to snap 6 weeks good healing time I learnt my lesson.  Even now almost a year later if I sleep on it i.e when im pi**ed it will hurt like fu$k all the next day, but ridding it rocks!  In July last year in Morzine it hurt a bit but no to bit, had a mad fall and luckily landed on my right side (non broken collar bone) and manager to fracture that arm, hehehehhe

So moral of the story is rest, rest and rest, get u sed to sleeping crap for at least 3 months and 2 months of that with a pillow propping the arm up so the collar bone is in a natural positon!

Good luck mate, hope you get ridding soon!

And for my Clavicle story....
bust mine in half (over the bars at speed hands down first ...doh), went to hospital and spent 4 hours waiting for a nurse to put my arm in a sling, there was no mention of fixing it.Went home to bed, and rolled over in my sleep to suddenly wake to the sound/sensation of bone scraping over bone and the tip of the top half poking out of my skin! Went back to hospital and they put a plaster over the protruding bone ! (admittedly it was only poking out a tiny bit...but still) It healed in a couple of months and now i have a bone lump where the two halves fused back together - it works fine and actually feels stronger now with the extra bone reinforcement.
heal up dude!

yep did mine aswell and didnt let it heal properly and now dont have the full movement in my shoulder as it has healed in a funny shape, take my advice dude and let it heal, luckily the loss of movement dont effect my riding as its only limited in upward movement
