some helpful hints please
« on: March 30, 2006, 16:34:34 PM »

just got a canon mini dv cam from where i work, got the usual stuff apart from an outlet for a helmet cam, which aint the end of the world coz it'll just be used by me.

any way, anyone got any useful tips for filming and that? film a bit of everything, dj's, dh.

when i look back at some of my footage though, it looks a bit boring, a bit run of the mill.

just want to know how to make it look at bit more action packed kinda thing

cheers, marty

depends what media software you use to make your vid, the one on windows is ok. some advice to making a video 'action packed' in to make clips as short as you can, use the zoom function on the time line to murge clips correctly. the one major thing that bugs me is where you have too much fottage of one section. chop things up a bit and make sure you dont over film sections (by that i mean showing one rider do an entire section for about 6 seconds, looks slow)

Shoot small stuff from below.
Mix up your camera angles as much as possible.
Practise smooth panning, makes all the difference.
Same as above with zoom control.

One simple thing though, mediocre riding is very difficult to make look amazing, its that simple. Being ruthless while editing is important too. If you arent sure about a shot, dont use it.

i reckon a good tip is to avoid using the zoom as much as possible. Try and set up the shot before hand, and keep the entire sequence under the same zoom. I always think it looks better, + as supercorss says, get used to smooth panning, and holding the cam still when you film. Nothing worse than jolty filming. Add some music to your footage, always helps!!

It takes a lot to make dirt jumping look good to be honest. Cable cams and boom cams can help, but I think that might be going a bit further than you want Wink Try a cable cam improv by riding along next to the set, with practice this can come out pretty well.

Even in the big budget films, the only dirt that ever really looks good is the super huge stuff anyway.

A skateboard or mountain board is dead useful for a budding cameraman. Get good at climbing trees aswell.

what size pin (i.e. is it 6 pin or 4 pin) is your firewire cable, if youve got one?

yeah you need a firewire card. As you dont already have the cable, you can get any card with either a 4 or a 6pin, and then get a cable which fits with whichever one you choose + your actual camera. Ill have a quick look for one now (cards should be around
