Your mum is coming around later so give her the shock and I'll sort it out for you? She said you weren't very good with your hands

yea, only thing with compression damping is it makes the bike less sensetive on the smaller bumps. but, will give it a go.

Correct, and I am suffering with this now, so I phoned mojo yesterday, they told me they could sort it by changing the valving at the bottom of the stroke.  On a dhx 5.0, you can adjust it yourself, but on an RC it is factory set, so only mojo can sort it.  The cost is

compression damping should be off, unless you want it to blow..

Sorry, a bit off topic, but im new to rear sus bikes and on my Fox V RC, the Blue dial i had done a few clicks round to make the rear a bit stiffer, why is the shock likely to blow like this?

I've un-done it now in fear of not wanting to blow it up, but the rear does seem very squishy now, its got the standard 450lbs spring and im not a big chap, 10 1/2 stone. I've re-set the damping to stop it topping out like a front fork would (dont know the correct terminology).

Cheers,

Adam

I can't see how having it done up will blow it, if it's done up to the max the your spring isn't right. I'm presuming what he means is if it's done to the max and you have a very hard landing oil will want to escape through  the vulnerable points

People need to stop doing this and leanr about simple suspension. The 'stiffness' of your shock comes from the srping or the amount of air in an air shock. Only way to stiffen em up is to change this.

The DAMPING is what your adjusting. This is what controls the shock, slows it down. If your winding on loads of compression damping cos your too heavy for your spring, your putting massive amounts of pressure on the damper as your forcing oil through a tiny hole. Buy the right spring.... Roll Eyes

basically dont touch the blue dial.

get the right spring sorted.
the blue dial closed off a valve making it harder for the oil to get in and out of the chamber. more more you turn the dial the more force is put on the oil as the shock compresses. and with the wrong spring (lighter) the more force of you smacking the shock on big drops rather than being absorbed by the spring its being handled by the compression valve. a too big a hit will cause the valve to blow as it cant handle the force of the oil pressed on it. BAM! blow shock.

hope that made sence! fewwww

chuck your vanilla ice cream shock in the bin and get a dhx 5.0.

had an RC  and had endless problems - basicalley stemming from the fact that the compression damping didnt function at all. I tried rediculously heavy rate springs for my weight and that didnt help. The coils made contact every time I did a tiny little drop.

na, i wouldnt say that, the RC has to be one of the best shocks out there to boot. stupidly smooth, and reliable. also, im not sure on the figures, but, it has to be lighter than a Fox DHX?! surely, as, it is a smaller unit.

i just need to get the right spring for mine, then im sorted. only 25lb out from the calc mind...

You could get the nitro pressure up to 180-200psi and have the end stroke shimmed so it does nto bottom out and still run a similar spring rate. dave and stendec can do that and service it for under
