BOXXERS - drilled base valves?
« on: April 08, 2006, 07:03:10 AM »

hi there, ive got a pair of boxxers and was wondering what drill the base valves would do to their performance. has nyone got any advice about doing it? will it work on the old red world cup forks?

i did mine a couple of days ago on my 02's.
its really easy- thake the uppers out, use snap ring pliers to get the snap ring off the compression side (you can see the valve before you take the damper out, its a plastic ring with 4 holes in it), the damper will slide out, slide the valve off the damper rod and drill a hole between each of the other holes, put it back together and job done.

i havent tested mine yet but it should make them feel smoother during rebound and cause less spiking. During a "car park test" i noticed they top out a bit harder than they did before but im sure the benifits will show on the track, well they best do Grin

hope that helps

My bro did this on his Boxxer 151's, drilled an extra 8 holes, using 5/64" (or 1.98mm Wink ) drill.

If I could, I would, but I can't, so I won't!

If you don't wanna risk KO'ing your base valve (and spares are hard to come by!), then there's a guy who occasionally appears on here (and on ebay) selling some CNCed ones that he made... I bought one, fitted it in my 02 Boxxers instead of the plastic one, and the performance is astonishing! It's effectively the same mod as Flooks used to do to the Racers forks back in 02 and was known as the Black Box mod...

You do need to up the oil weight slightly though to 15W from 12.5W as standard... What this does though is provide you with more low speed compression damping (less brake dive) but a smoother less spikey high speed compression damping (less arm pump over big hits etc)...

A well set up 02 Boxxer will still beat just about anything else on the market in my opinion...

cheers for that, thats really helpful. im an engineer, when i get em in bits ill have a look at the base vavle and prolly try and emulate it out of ali, although i think ive got  titainium which might do.

would you say theyre as good as 888s?  do you drill the holes the same diameter as the existing ones?

Only problem I see with metal base valves, rather than it being plastic (well, nylon, whatever material it is) on metal, it's metal on metal.

Just my thought.

that's his email addy!

Nice one...

As far as better than 888's goes??? SHEDLOADS is the simple answer... No compression spiking, no hideous fork dive under braking... Ok, slightly flexier, but lighter and perform better... And they're still plenty stiff enough for a DH fork...

Oh, and if you're drilling em out yourself, NO they are not the same size as the originals... The originals are about 3mm each, and for the mod, you need 8 more (12 holes in total, the 4 x 3mm original ones plus the 8 new smaller ones) that should be drilled... Forget exactly what size, but it's something like 1.8mm...

Easiest option is to email Dave Lockwood though... Was super happy with the quality of my aluminium base valve, and it did my forks (just left with their new owner this evening!) proud for a while...
