Right Several things.

1 If your getting a DSLR you really dont want your only lense to be a fisheye. you want it so be something like a 50mm prime or a 24-70mm zoom range.

2 If you want to take Shots of a good quality then definatly get a DSLR not a compact.  DSLR's give alot better adjustment and you can just buy new lenses and flash when you have problems where as with compacts your stuck

3 I dont know if your looking for Canon or Nikon. Some people will say ones better than the other but at the sort of price our looking there going to be about the same.

4 Your best bet at that cost is to go into shops like jessops or somewhere and ask about reconditioned cameras. I got my 300d with the kit lense for

350Ds are a good body

but with that you get no lenses at all, so your looking at spending another 200 quid or so for something decent that will cover all you basic needs.

i personally went for the 350D, i had the money to buy one new, at 575 with the kit lens (thats the 18-55)
if you can find one in your price range, id deffinatly recomend it, canon as a company is much, much larger.
although, ive youve used a nikon, you may want to go for that.

the nice thing about getting on second hand is, if you feel your not loving the whole photography thing, you can sell it on and hardly loose a penny.
