urmm - I got an Extreme III with a write speed of 20mbs.

It's a lot better than just bog-standard cards - it's the fastes on Sandisk make I think Grin!

It's only an estimate as far as I'm aware, so depending on what the content of the pictures is, it could be more or less, or just down to the NEF format?

Yeah could be.. there are a load of factors affecting file size.. I've only ever filled a card up once anyway!

what advantages do you get exactly by having a faster writing card.
im abit of a noob with all this and was always under the imression that the only factor with buying memory cards was the stroage capacity (512mb, 1gb etc.)

Well basically, when you take a photo on your camera, it stores it in the camera buffer, and then it writes it to the CF card.

It can write to the buffer instantly, but it takes time to write to the card. So when your buffer fills up (Which you can only do by taking long bursts of shots) it needs to empty space on the buffer before you can take another shot.. Otherwise when you take the shot, it will have nowhere to store the photo.

During this period the camera locks up untill space is made, which is obviosuly no good as the moments for photos are passing you by..

A faster write speed just allows your camera to empty the buffer quicker, and thus allow you to take more shots Smiley

And also doesn't leave you hanging about waiting for it to finish.

I have got a Ultra II 1gig, next to no loading times when I come to review what I have got on my card. On the bog standard ones I have to wait a good 3-4 seconds, not much but after trying both I wont buy a slower memory card

having used a cannon 650 and 300 slrs in the past it was natural to get the 350 dslr as it works with my old lenses!

so far it seems fine and is very similar to the old 650 in how it works. ie easier than the 300!

ady there is really bugger all between the 2. if you can get into jessops and see if you can have a play with the menus and see which works best for you.

i got mine from PCworld/dixons slightly better price than jessops shop prices.

Ive got a 350D, go for a 1GB card, can fit about 450photos on medium and 260 on Large, but to be honest unless you want to print huge prints not much point of having it on the large setting (these figures are for the jpeg not the raw images by the way)

Got a telephoto lens (55-200mm) with my 350D aswell, well worth it, or though i use the 18-55 alot more when doing photography of mtb. F-stops not great on either, but good to start off with  Smiley

Hope i'm of some help.

http://www.mymemory.co.uk/

Absolutely the cheapest memory I could find, ordered a "my memory" branded 2GB 133x CF card (the fastest speed available - 20MB R/R times) and its great... The best bit is that it was only 45 quid all in! for 2GB at 133x That is a bargain! You notice the speed - but not as much as you would think... Much better for JPG but when your using burst on RAW its not so much better. (I use a 20D) I suppose if you had a better camera you would see a significant improvement.

sounds likea bargin,  also depends on your shooting style as to whetehr you notice the speed difference, I dont shoot video with my camera as some people do Shocked !!! but with Raw its not as great as you would like to think anyways, like I said, with JPG there is an obvious difference.

Trust me there wont be. you said your D70 can take 144 consectutive shots? you ever going to need to take 144 shots at 3fps? Hardly ever.

Biggest I have have ever needed to do on my 350D was about 6 frames at 3ps, 2 seconds of action. You ever been in a place with 48 seconds of continious action clubmud?

But I agree with zakalwe, when using RAW the best memory comes in very handy, shame i have just never really bothered with raw thats all.

so the sandisk extreme III range of cards are pretty much the best i take it?

gonna be ordering myself a 350d with lens kit (18-55mm) in afew days and need to sort out what card to get

a 1gb extreme 3 retails for about 70quid
however the wonders of ebay mean i'll be picking one up for about 35 quid  Smiley

Yeah the sandisk extreme III and the lexar professional cards are the fastest you can get at 133x (1x = 150kb/s). Which works to 19950 kb/s Tongue.

Great choice on the camera, just remember that the kit lens will only get good at the high ap number range of the lens. 6.3-7.1 is usually a good bet.

Any issues just shoot, there seems to be a huge amount of canon guys here now i dont know about but I have the 130, as does session 17, Jim used to on one too so we three have a personal experience with them.
