''Bending front rotor...'' Please help.
« on: July 23, 2006, 18:40:04 PM »

Hey, I have a slight problem with my Hope old style (silver caliper) m4 front brake. I have noticed that when i press the front brake on of the pads actually bends the rotor to press up against the other pad. The rotor bends a good 2-3mm before the brake locks on. I looked down in between my pads and the rotor is bang in the middle (how it should be)

However the left side pad is very very close to the rotor which is what I want but the right hand pad is quite far away from the rotor.

Can anyone tell me how to push the right hand pad closer to the rotor so that when the pads bite the disk, the rotor wont bend. As I said the rotor is bang in the middle of the caliper and also when rolling, if you pull the lever in slightly the brake squeels and makes the bars shudder lol.

Can anyone please help me out? Thanks  Wink Grin

you need to use the fine spacers to space the disk between the pads not between the 2 caliper halves.

You can always get your brake mounts faced at your lbs. I had the same probelm with my hayes, one pad was closer to the disc, so the brake was really sharp. But then when i was on my cytech bike mechanic course i had the opportunity to face both mounts n the brake is working perfectly, like any other hayes hfx9's.
Hope this helped, if not sorry  Tongue

Thanks guys. If i space the rotor out between the pads, the disk ends up rubbing on the caliper and makes a wierd tinging sound when rotated. This would mean that one of my pads has worn down but it/they havnt. Both pads are fine put if i could just make the right pad come in a little closer it would be sorted. Hmmm.

if you use the rotor to push in the piston that comes out most and while holding that piston in pull the lever a couple of times to bring the "lazy" piston out this doesnt always work though.
Having your brake mounts faced is always a good idea aswell.

it basically makes sure that the brake mounts are level with each other, sometimes when forks are sprayed etc one of the mounts may get slightly thicker than the other making the brake very difficult to align.

facing the mounts makes the brake easier to align and also improves braking because of this

Ahhh, I dont know how to face mine then because I have 2003 Shiver DC's and the mounts arnt the same as other forks. Hard to describe as the mount has a hole for the bolt head to fit into.

it will face the inside of the mount, the side that the caliper sit's against. i guess you were thinking that it did the other side?

its makes sure the mounts are 100% lined up with the wheel axel. so haveing to do that removes the paint it down't level them out just lines it all up.

i say the opposite, and that one of the pistons isnt working completely properly,

One piston might not be retracting properly.

so therefore pushing one piston back into the caliper and bringing the other out sorts it.  Roll Eyes
