Hello, I'm (formerly) Mr Ed
|
im actually totally against that - 99% of the time if you get scammed on a forum its your own fault. every time i buy something off this or any other forum, unless i personally know the person i will always get a home phone number, there address and usually cross check the address from the phone book.
as for post counts giving access to the buy sell forums, all that does is either turn people away from the site, or encourage random spamming of the other boards, besides you have some complete muppets with 1000+ post counts who screw you around (and yes the one or 2 still on here will remain nameless).
all the fraud emails you get from the ad's all look pretty similar and its usually a similar scam, again you have to be a muppet to fall for one.
as for a feedback system, good idea in principle, however is it really needed, i have my ideas as to how reliable people are, just from the sort of stuff they post on the forums.
one feature i feel should be used, but i know it will go down like a ton of s**t is to ban under 16 year olds from the for sale section as in my experience they are the biggest time wasters as they simply dont have the cash to follow things through.
anyway, if you dont feel the site is safe then simply dont use it for buying and selling, you want ebay style features, this take time effort and money to implement, and it would end up as a pay per use ad board to cover costs. if you want ebay security use ebay. you dont want to get scammed... dont be a muppet, observe other posts of the person, it says alot about them.

There is one small downfall with the post count thing, and thats people from other forums getting wind of this, and coming on here, and typing 50 total and utter crap posts, and listing their stuff in the classifieds. Though 50 is a fair few crap posts and could take some time to do!
It is a very good idea though, as i often get lots of emails and stuff from newbies who think they know everything (not that i do myself!) and try offering silly money for things, or try getting me to post my item first, which i'm never going to do.
It wastes my time, so maybe its time to waste some of their time!
I would love to go along with the ones where they send silly money first, and never send my item, but i don't really want them to have my address, or my work address for that matter!

Best system I've come across is the one on our old trials forum. Have a seperate board in the classifieds section. Each person starts there own references thread Each time you deal with a person, take a moment to leave any comments, with a link to the sale thread. If someone is complained about, then the mods can also reference this information to see who's messing people about on regular basis. Also, making it compulsary to exchange contact details before agreeing a sale is a good idea, though probably down to the seller to make sure this occurs
One thing i'm getting fed up of is people saying 'i might have that off ya, i'll tell ya tomorrow' then you get no response, and no replies from pm's. Is this something we just have to put up with? No real way of enforcing it i guess, but it really gets on my nerves! First board i've used where its been so frequent
Anyways, i think references are the way to go. If the references don't check out, or there aren't any there yet, then make sure you get contact details before going ahead with payment first.
