Dislocaed thumb
« on: July 24, 2006, 14:25:18 PM »

Riding solo to meet up with some mates at wentwood i dislocated my thumb in the lamest way ever. I was shifting down the gears when i felt ressistance, as i looked down and tryed again i saw the bone of my thumb come over the knuckle then fall back into place again. That is one of the most painful things ive ever done, im just glad i didnt have to pull it back into place. Anyway some electrical tape did the job of keeping it strapped up for the ride. Anybody know how long it will take untill i can change gear again.

dislocated my middle finger last year racing.
i poped it back in and rode the rest of the track but then it totally locked up. miss out on both my race runs
it took a good 3 weeks before it could grip the handle bar properly without having pains.
i rode for 2 weeks in france 3 weeks after doing it and i think it did more harm than good, i managed to pop it out another 3-4 times while out there.
cartlidge is all over the place and there are lumps both sides of the middle knuckle, where i dislocated it.
i cant fully bend my finger into my palm and it clicks everytime i extend it.
rest it mate is the best medicine. if you can visit the doc's you may need a small op if the disloaction was bad as the cartlidge maybe damaged and when it heals it will fuse on the wrong place (like mine did) leading to problems in later life

same here......
but if you want it to heal properly rest it. you will do more harm than good if you keep riding.
if you dislocated it the muscles are probably torn, and the cartlidge around the bone is damaged too. al that takes time to heal.
riding when its sore will lead to it getting inflamed and the tissue not having a chance to recover.
yes strpp it up my all means if you ride

Hi Guys

I dislocated my thumb against my handlebar about ten days ago. Now I'm only going on what I've researched and what the surgeons have said, but the main issue is ligament damage. Type either gamekeeper's thumb, or skier's thumb into google and you'll get lots of info. I don't mean to go scaremongering but it's best to get that puppy checked out just in case. I'm in a partial cast for six weeks and have had to cancel a holiday to the alps. It's one of those injuries that is relatively simple to do, "but complex to heal" - quoting my surgeon.

The good news is that your dislocation doesn't sound too harsh, you may be lucky.

Oh, and I got a grade one shoulder separation in the same crash. Best time of year to ride and I have to spend my days doing sweet f*&K all! Bugger.

Thanks for reading my waffle
