Is this a known problem..?
If it is then i didn't know about it until i read this on singletrack;

http://www.singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/cracks-in-cranks?replies=23#post-764777

Checked mine and they are indeed cracked, approx. 18mm long on the none drive side one.

Hmmmmm. Thats a really strange crack. There should be enough material strength in that direction to cope with DH stresses for years. Would expect them to break either the pedal or twist the actual crank before you got anywhere near that type of failure.

Will keep an eye out for any word from the big S, and keep a close eye on the SLX iv just fitted!

Mine are at CRC now. I was the first person the the OP on Singletrack website refers to. I will find out tomorrow what is gonna happen with them. I'm gonna push for a replacement as they are only 8 months old. I'll post up what the outcome is.

Anyone had any slx cranks actually fail on them yet...?

I've also got a brand new pair ready to go on the downhill bike and not too sure if i want to put them on or not now.

c**k. Busy laughing at this (hones were much better anyway, I win!) until I read hones are affected as well. Checked my bikes, 2 out of three sets of hones cracked. Balls!

In fact the not-cracked set are the ones without steel inserts - the ones I had thought were weakest and are thus on the xc bike...

Yep hones too, it seemed (ironically) that it was only the cranks with steel pedal inserts that were cracking but someone has now posted up on singletrack that he has cracks in 2 pairs of xt's aswell.

Whats going off?

Are we all able to claim under warranty (dependant on how old they are i assume)...?

Hmmm. On closer inspection of the non-steel insert hones they too have a very faint line where the crack is on the others. Not sure if its a crack or just a forging mark, I'd need to compare it to some brand new ones.

On the plus side, the fact that noone has noticed this before suggests they arent going to fail any time soon.

Same, and it turns out both of my sets of hones have these!

Meh, i think i'll take my chances and just keep an eye on it. I've never seen one actually snap there.
